Sport Climbing in Tenerife

Sport climbing is one of the most popular climbing discipline in Tenerife, as this volcanic island offers rock climbing routes for every taste and ability, from technical slabs to overhangs, crack climbing to slopers, long sustained routes to bouldery sport climbing.

The dormant volcanic mountain of Mount Teide (3,718m high) dominates the rugged landscape and has moulded the island into truly incredible shapes. This volcano produced a reddish volcanic ignibrite rock that is common throughout all the climbing areas on the island. This rock is peppered with many pockets and the occasional cracks, providing mainly crimpy technical routes

Tamadaya

This sector of the Arico gorge was bolted in December 2014 and is bolted specifically for beginners; the most difficult route is 6b+. Routes are currently in great condition, well bolted, with realistic grading. Most routes require a full 60m rope with a couple of longer climbs requiring a 70m although there were intermediate lower-off rings.

Arico Arriba/Abajo

Arico was one of the first rock climbing areas in Southern Tenerife to be bolted, and currently holds the greatest number of routes of any of the climbing areas in the island—over 250! In the upper part of the canyons, the routes are usually shorter and with lower grades, while the lower part offers longer and higher graded routes.

El Rìo

There are about 150 rock climbing routes in the El Rio canyon, with medium to high grades. The routes are usually technical stamina routes with some bouldery moves, and vary in heights from 25 to 35m. Find more information about the routes on 27crags, Roxtar, Crag.
